Basil grows from a can.

Basil has many varieties. It produces a fragrance similar to that of a clove. The classic use of this versatile herb is its culinary use with tomato based sauces, pesto, and vinegars. The medicinal uses are to eliminate phlegm, promote digestion and strengthen the stomach. In ancient times, pots of basil on the windowsill were used to deter flies. Other possible uses of basil are by placing fresh leaves in a hot bath as an infusion. As a tonic, steep a few leaves in wine for several hours. Or steep in water as a tea to aid digestion. A drop of basil oil on clothing will help counteract mental fatigue.

As pleasing to the eye, mind, and soul; Lavender has many everyday uses. Since medieval times it's been used to promote a calming effect, for its antiseptic properties, and to soothe headaches by inhaling the aromas. This naturally beneficial herb is a great addition to any garden.

Oregano is an aromatic, warm, and slightly bitter tasting herb. Traditionally used in Italian dishes yet is widely used in many countries cuisines. It is high in antioxidant and antimicrobial activity which make it an excellent health and food preservative. The leaves and stems are strongly antiseptic, sedative and the oil extract is taken for treatment of colds, flu, fevers, and more.
This would be a useful addition to any herb garden for easy access due to all its beneficial uses.

Rosemary has a rich fragrance with a hint of camphor, it's a natural antiseptic, anti-parasitic and the aroma improves memory.

Spearmint is a well known herb. It is originally from North Africa and is named for its spear shaped leaves of the plant. Spearmint can be traced back to ancient times. The Ancient Greeks used spearmint to scent their bathwater and the Romans used it to prevent milk from curdling. Spearmint was used in medieval times for oral hygiene. Thyme was used by ancient Egyptian's for embalming and ancient Greeks used it in their baths and believed it was a source of courage. Thyme is a good source of iron and is used widely for culinary purposes. It has antiseptic properties and is effective against the fungus that commonly infects toenails. A tea made by infusing water with Thyme can be used for preventing cough and bronchitis.

Sage is historically the most useful herb known to man for its healing properties and value. It's been recommended at one time or another for virtually every ailment. Evidence supports its effects as an antibiotic, antifungal, astringent, antispasmodic, estrogenic, hypoglycemic, and tonic. Sage has been found to be effective in the management of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. This would be not only a beautiful but beneficial addition to your herb garden.
